KETRON ISLAND

Glorious sunsets all the time.

Some of the most beautiful sunsets can be seen from along the western shore of the island.

The abundant local deer are always a site to be seen.

Trip description

The island's just a little southwest of the Steilacoom ferry dock.  The paddle is about a 6 mile round trip and provides wonderful views of the setting sun.  Wildlife is always present along its shores.  I've watched Bald Eagles and Seals fishing, Deer grazing, Otters playing, and I always seem to scare-up the Herons and Kingfishers.  The boat traffic along Cormorant Passage is always low and the currents aren't significant enough to worry about.  If you want to get away from the hum-drum of city life but don't want to travel too far, Ketron Island is your place to paddle.

Directions

From I-5 take the Steilacoom-DuPont exit and follow the road toward the Sound into the town of Steilacoom.  You should be on Union Avenue as you enter the town.  FDollow this road straight to the Ferry Terminal.  Park your car in the lot and pay the launching fee.  At high tide the water is up in the parking lot and makes it real easy to launch your boat.

If you're coming from Tacoma you can always take Steilacoom Blvd. down into the town.

Tides and currents

The currents are of little significance.  I always like to paddle on the high tide because I can get in close and play around under the branches of the trees along the shore while looking for beach agates.
