Fleet-1 October 2011 Report Fleet meeting: 7:00 pm 14 October 2011 The Lounge at Arabella’s Landing7:00 pm Breaking News: Two New Birds in the Harbor New owner for Orca Thunderbird fever is rampant in Gig Harbor and has seriously infected three Gig Harbor big boat sailors. In July, Gino Cruciani acquired #1196 from Ken Dzinbal, Olympia, and has already raced the boat, now called Warrior, in the Rendezvous and the Thursday Evening Series. Not to be out done, Marc Jorgenson and Tom Mitchell partnered up to buy # 1069, formerly Kitiwake of Fleet-1. It is terrific to have one boat return to the flock and to keep one from leaving. The new T-Birder skippers are planning on tuning up their boats over the winter and we are looking forward to some great racing next season. Theresa and Rick Creatura, while sailing with your Fleet Captain, became enamored with Orca and had to have it! Enough said, the Creaturas are now the proud owners of this T-Bird Icon. Upcoming events: Le Mans Race, November 12, 2012 After a one year hiatus due to construction of a new sewer Line through the harbor, the Le Mans Race is back. The NOR for this Fall Classic will be posted at the GHYC website soon. Are any racers from Fleet-2 going to make the trip south? Let me know and we will arrange a suitable welcome and arrange appropriate logistics. It is going to be a great race, don’t miss it! The Frostbite Series January – February 2012 This is four afternoons worth of Racing in Gig Harbor. A great way to beat the winter doldrums and keep the barnacles off the bottom of your boat an your bottom, too. The schedule is being formulated and will be posted at the Fleet 1 web site and the Gig Harbor YC Web site. Rendezvous Report Fourteen Thunderbirds flocked to Gig Harbor August 5-6-7, 2011for a fabulous rendezvous that included great racing, fun sailing, delicious food and best of all, that indescribable Thunderbird camaraderie.
Pictures of the Rendezvous, taken by Sheila Mordue of the Gig Harbor
Yacht Club, can be found at: The Rendezvous began on Saturday with a Regatta in side Gig Harbor. Much to the amazement of the locals, the wind blew all day, at a steady 5-6 knots: no major shifts, just a nice steady breeze. This allowed the committee to get off 6 races, some with multiple laps, and all but the last with spinnakers. The short course, coveted mini-bird trophies for the top 4, and fourteen boats on the line made for intense racing. Swan was first, with a brand new very fast loose-footed main, followed by Fandango, Selchie and Red Dwarf. On Sunday we had a very unconventional “race” around Gig Harbor. Four marks were set around the harbor and the fleet was divided into 4 groups. Each group had to sail a different specified course and all boats had to start at anchor. It was quite a spectacle watching boats dodging each other, as well as boats anchored or motoring through the close confines of the harbor. Thanks to the Gig Harbor Boat Shop, the home of the Thunderbird, for hosting a great event. The Boat Shop is busy restoring #2 and is becoming a hot bed of T-Bird activity. In fact, after the racing, T-Bird #11 was donated to the Boat Shop. Although showing its years, it appears to have a sound hull and it is a prime candidate for restoration Results for the Thunderbird Rendezvous Regatta, August 2011
In the Harbor Report What began as 4 races inside Gig Harbor every Thursday in May has reached epic proportions. This past season Gig Harbor sailors raced in 22 consecutive Thursday evening races. The growing Thunderbird flock was represented in every race by one or more boats.
