Along with his brothers John, who came over from Germany in 1884, they worked for a family by the name of Bushard, on their farm, near St. George, Minnesota. George Schweiss is buried in the St. Andrew's Cemetery, At Fairfax, Minnesota, just North of the Statue of Jesus. George died at the home of his daughter, Gertrude Schweiss Liebl. General Notes: When I was attending St. Andrew's Catholic School in Fairfax, and needed to spend the night, I had the honor of staying with Mary in the back of Hubert's Shoe Repair Shop in Fairfax, near the Old Movie Theatre.
Mary moved to Fairfax, from Mapleton, when Frank was told he had a short time to live. He had Pernicious Anemia. He died in 1926 and Mary Ann was 8 years old. They bought a house in the south part of Fairfax. Mary sold her home and then lived in the back of his shoe shop, which was located on the side of the street where the movie theatre was located near by.
Mary Ann graduated from Fairfax, and then went to Business College in Mankato, Minnesota. She worked in Renville, at the County Court House, for a couple of years and then went to Owatonna and worked at Federated Insurance Company for 27 years.
When Mary had her first stroke she went to live with Mary Ann and Don for 13 years in Owatonna, Minnesota. Mary then went to Divine Providence in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. It was run by five nuns from Itatly. She was there for four and a half years before her death.

Mary married Frank J. Kortz on 26 Nov 1919. Frank was born on 14 Jan 1891 and died on 1 Nov 1926 at age 35.

General Notes: Mary and Frank lived in Mapleton, Minnesota. Kathleen thinks they were farmers, until he took sick with maybe, Leukemia, whereupon they moved back to Fairfax, Minnesota. Mary died at he Nursing home in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Mary had Dementia, and had some strokes. Frank might have had a brother named Tony Kortz, and a sister, Sister Lucretia from Iowa. Kathy thought that the name Kortz might be Polish or German.

I also remember uncle Bill, drawing this huge rabbit on the wall of our chicken house after it was washed down. He also would show us kids how he could find corn kernals in his ear. And it looked awful when he took out his false teeth, his lips caved in, it was scarey. Anne, as we called her loved to listen to old time music, polkas and waltzes on Sundays, when Liz, Juliette and I would play together. We also took our ice skates and met Liz and we would go down the ditch and ice skate all the way over toward Hank and Bertha's and over toward Ben and Gala's. Anne and Frank Beck were brother and sister.

Tho her smile is gone forever, and her hand we cannot touch, still we ha
ve so many memories of the one we love so much. Her memory is our keepsake, with which we will never part. God has her in His keeping, we have her in our hearts.
Dorothy loved to Crochet, I purchased lots of crocheted Barbie Doll clothes form her. I would stop at her home in Mapleton and visit with her and Frank, on my way to see my Mom while she was in the Fairfax Nursing Home. She was so proud of her Flowers in the garden and in her house, I think she had a green thumb because her plants were so beautiful. I have some of her Crocheted Dollies that I will treasure the rest of my life.

General Notes: Christina Homan Schweiss entered the Fairfax Nursing Home in Nov. of 1991, around Thanksgiving time. I came back to Fairfax to live in February of 1991, I lived less than a block away from where Mom was living with Barb and Ron Rieke. It was very convenient to stop in and see Mom any time that I was available. She enjoyed going to the corner cafe for coffee just to get out of the house. She tired easily at this time of her life, and her Joints gave her alot of discomfort, and moved slowly. By November of 1991 she was getting weaker and had fallen on the floor while she was living with the Riecke's while they were gone. Mrs Leo Fahey was also living there but could not do anything for Mother so she had to stay on the floor until someone came home. Leo and I came to the home and the ambulance was called and Doctor Gilles was called in. I had a talk with Doc and told him that I thought it was a good idea if he told Mom, that she needed to be in a nursing home. We went inside and Doc put his hand on Tina's and said, "Tina, I think its time to go to the Nursing Home," she said, "Ok Doc, whatever you say." It was close to Thanksgiving time and I had to move back to Topeka, Kansas. Mom accepted the Nursing Home very well, she had alot of friends and loved to be around people. She would not give up her car until she knew she could not leave the home. She knew a lady that would drive her car and take her where ever she wanted to go. She loved to go shopping and never came home empty handed, she always was a neat looking lady.
She loved playing cards and would love to pull a fast one on you if you were not paying attention. When she was younger and driving a car, her foot would get a little heavy on the pedal, and she would say, "St. Christopher just jumped out."
When Juliette and I ( Julianna) ,were very young, I dont remember the exact year, but she developed a skin condition that resembled excema, she was covered from head to toe with it he would have to be gauzed up from head to toe. Her and Alex had her nephew, Donald Bach, stay at the house to tend to the meals and Children. Her hands would crack and bleed from being in water.
I do not remember alot of childhood memories but what I do remember were good memories. We little ones would make paths out in the grove with the David Bradley, which now would be a lawnmower with a blade in front, and it could also till the garden. We would take our bikes and drive all around the paths. We had stops where one of us would say it was our home. We used bailing twine to tie off the trees to mark our home, we used peach crates, nailed to trees for our cupboards. When we would invite some one over to play in our house we would make mud pies, and let them dry. We would make home made high heals with wood and used fruit jar rings, red rings, to hold the shoes on. Mom would give us lip stick to wear but had to wash it off before coming back into the house. I also remember one time when Mom and Dad went to New Ulm, and it had rained alot and had filled our ditch by the mailbox with water, it was dirty water, but we went in it anyway. When Mom and Dad came home he had a smile on his face but when we came up to the house we got a licking for being in the water.
Mom always had a big garden, and was always so proud of it, neighbors would always tell her how nice it looked. Mom and Dad planted potatoes in the field, that was shared with his siblings and their families, Bill, Hank, Angela, also known as Gela, and Alex, or Dad. They would all plant together, and would dig them up together, and there were alot of kids so guess what, we all went to the field and picked up potatoes as the tractor and potatoe digger dug them up. When the adults were ahead of us we would throw the small potatoes at each other, and if we got caught we got yelled at.
The crops were done the same, they shared machinery, and would help bail hay at each others farm until it was all put up. The bailer and tractor was driven by one, the tractor and hay rack was driven by another, The tractor that pulled the sling with the hay fork, that could hold 8 bales at one time, would drive in reverse until the rope was pulled, to trip the hay fork into the hay barn where 2 to 3 more men would stack the hay in the barn. The girls would have to help outside also. I use to love to help outside, Gena helped in the kitchen, and Juliette watched the little ones.
I also remember when Agnes Homan now Mathiowetz and My brother Harold had to watch us kids when Mom and Dad were in New Ulm, and the little rescals was a popular show on television. Agnes and Harold thought it was time for snacks and decided to put some soap in our chocolate milk so that we would blow bubbles like alfalfa on the little rascals, guess what it did not happened. We did not have alot of toys so we would have to pretend alot. I remember our two large rooms upstairs, one was for the boys and the other for the girls, and we would play church, One would be the Priest, and one the Nun, and we would take one of mom's white dish towels and a piece of cardboard that had a shiney side and fold it to shape our forehead and the dish towel over that so it looked like what the Nuns wore in Church or St. Andrew's school.
In the year of 1991, Lawrence had a bulldozer, and Mom and I ,and Mike, Julie and kids watched Lawrence Bulldoze it down, and then buried it. I have it on video camera. I have mom in the film sitting on the toilet upstairs pretending, and captured her beautiful smile. Whenever I would come back to Fairfax, to visit, Mom always wanted her and I to go to see Mike and Dave at the farm. I did not get to come home very often because of money, I was lucky to get home twice a year.
In 1963 in the summer, I went to Myndall Cain's School for Cosmotology. In 1964, after I graduated from Hector, High School, I finished Beauty School. I graduated in January, and got Married to David Joseph Weber from Gibbon, Minnesota on February 20, 1965. David has a brother Leon who married my twin sister, Juliette, and we had a double wedding. David and Leon came from a family of 14 children, and Richard and Dennis were twins. Angeline also known as Angie and Lester were very hard working people and enjoyed playing cards, Sheephead.
David and I lived in Mountain Lake, Minnesota in 1965. Daved was employed by Land O' Lakes Creamery and drove milk truck to farm places to pick up the milk cans that were kepted in coolers or tanks of water to keep it from spoiling. Dave came home from milk hauling one day with a Monkey, its name was Bingo, And I wasn't to thrilled about it because he was a dirty stinky Monkey. One day I was in our house in Mountain Lake and I heard this awful noise in the basement stairway, as I opened the door to the stairway , I seen flour all over the steps and in the basement and the Monkey was loose from his chain and making an awful mess. I had the flour in a Large Jar and Bingo had knocked it off the shelf. Dave walked home from Land O' Lakes, and as he was walking across the field to our house I went out to tell him what had happened. In the Fall of 1965 Bingo died and Dave did not speak to me for a couple of days, He thought I killed Bingo, but I did not, I think he took ill.
I worked for a lady in Mountain Lake for .90 cents an hour, our rent for our house was 50.00 a month. On November 25, 1965, Thanksgiving Day, Shane was born. In February of 1966 Dave got a job with Hauser Lumber Company and I worked for Edna Brunner, a beautician in Gibbon, Minnesota until I had my one year apprenticeship in. We bought a home in Gibbon from Lundenberg's, and our house payments were 50.00 a month. In 1967 I opened a Beauty Shop in our home and had converted the living room to a Beauty Shop. Sharise was born in January of 1967, she was our snow storm baby, we were escorted to New Ulm, by a county snowplow, she was born one hour after we arrived, I had to be put to sleep right after her birth, because the after birth would not come out.
In February of 1968, Angela was born and I had to be put to sleep again the afterbirth would not come out, 10 months later Tracy was born and my after birth did not come out again, but this time I refused to be put to sleep. and the Doctor did not waste any time, I bled very bad and had to be packed with gause and both of us were told not to have children for awhile. In 1974 Dave got a job with Chicago Northwestern Railroad, in Franklin, Minnesota. In 1975 we moved to Superior, Wisconsin. We lived by the Nemadji River near Lake Superior. While living in Superior, Wisconsin my IUD became lodged inside of me and I had to be put to sleep and have it removed. In 1975 I had to have a hysterectomy.
In 1996 Dave was transferred to Minneapolis. We moved to a suburb, Fridley, Minnesota. We were there about one year, and Dave was transferred to Kansas City, Missouri. We lived in Gladstone, Missouri. We rented a home on Highland Street from Sue and Archie. In 1978 we bought a home on 68th Terrace in Gladstone, Missouri. In 1993 our four children where in Oak Park High School all at the same time, it had never been done before.
In 1993 Dave lost his job with the Railroad because of employees selling scrap Metal.He got a job In California, and we had to sell our home and move to Barstow, California. Shane was a senior at the time and chose to stay in Missouri to be with his love, whom he married at a later time. I did not enjoy California at all. I left Dave in 1985 and came back to Missouri to live, we were divorced in 1987. I remarried and so did Dave.
Christina's State File number was 020148. In the file they have her Mother's maiden name spelled as Schmidt, it should be Schmitt.

He liked to sing out loud and sometimes in German, that got my mother, Gertrude Schweiss, Liebl, and she would scold him. He was short, rudy complexion, and a deep hearty laugh, like Gela's, only deeper. He did not like my mother combing his hair. He chewed tobacco. I remember his spittoon over at his daughter's, Dorothy Schweiss Beck who lived about a block and a half from our home. Dorothy's home was next to the Dickmeyer Garage, which was across the street from the Catholic Priest House. I do not remember any Spitoon at our home.
He loved kids and was not afraid to holler at them, especially at Dorothy's kids. When we would play with grampa George, he liked to play the boogie man. He would sit on the bed and I would try to get as close as I could without him catching me.
He was usually good natured and full of energy. I think he also smoked cigars, but I am not sure. His hair was completely grey.He was not over or under weight. I think he would have been a good salesman today. He was real out going and was also very likeable. Thank you Suzanne for the information.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and a half sister Iona Anderson. Funeral services were held 10:30 AM Friday, December 14, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia with the Rev. Jim Berning officiating. The organist was Gloria Eager. Casketbearers were Jim Breiter, John Breiter, Rodney Byro, Harold Davis, Vern Klinkner, and Roy mcCabe. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
